Week 1: November 7

Planning

Hello, world! I’m Jade Hoyer, Denver, Colorado-based artist and educator. My media include printmaking, installation, turf grass, and coffee cups. I’m excited to be a SHE digital resident for the month of November. I’ve enjoyed reading Bronwyn Wall’s updates, and I’m excited to be sharing a bit of my practice on this platform.

This month, I will be creating an installation in collaboration with Lissette Ramirez, an awesome artist who is also one of my students at Metropolitan State University of Denver. We’ve been invited to create an installation in the printshop there at the University of Louisville.

The space (currently) looks like this! The install will be on one of the side walls.

For this project, we’ve been thinking about a few things:

I’m enjoying Shantell Martin’s exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. I so love her use of negative and positive space, and her use of text.

Lisette was inspired by a Denver-based artist, Scott Young, whose work is displayed at a local hotel. The sign depicts the caption “Wish you were here,” but the last letter flickers out periodically, changing the meaning of the piece.

We’ve also been reflecting on our own artistic practices. For an exhibition last year, I created a modified pop-up that shifts between two images, while on her end, Lisette created a series of drawings based on movement between locations. She would hold a pen walking between classes, or walking from her home to work, etc, to create lovely layered scribbles. We’ll be using these for the project! Our plan is to create a modular design for U of L that plays with the words, “Art” and “Know” while playing on negative and positive.

Ephemeral Voice: A Collection of Objects that Guide Us

Today’s modern world is not a slow one. At any given moment, we are inundated with multiple sensory distractions and social expectations. Whether conscious or not, we each have rituals that help us re-center. This is an experimental examination of the objects that help us be ourselves.

A Tussle with the Genius Loci: Catherine Nelson

Catherine Nelson explores the intersection of her research into improvisation, drawing, fabrication and her own connection to the Louisiana landscape in an immersive installation at Book Club Gallery this June titled “A Tussle with the Genius Loci”. The exhibition will also host a performance by Known Mass dance company titled “Secret Beach”, scored by Ann Glaviano and co-choreographed by Ann Glaviano, Rebecca Allen and Dewuan Frances in contact with sculptures and drawings by Nelson in the Art Egg atrium at sunset.

Nelson’s installation, composed with tea-dyed collagraph prints, steel collage sculptures, found objects, drawings on glass, papier mache, surface prints from the bayou, and direct wall drawing

Works of Paper: Kate Skakel

Kate Skakel, a New Orleans based artist and fabricator, explores sculptural approaches to paper through cuts and physical monotypes in this solo exhibition.

Skakel graduated in May 2016 from the University of Vermont with a degree in Studio Art, and spent the following fall at Yestermorrow Design and Build School studying fine furniture making and woodworking. She currently builds furniture professionally. In her visual art, Skakel works both three dimensionally, utilizing metal and wood, as well as two dimensionally, making prints and photographs.
