June 2021: Welcome Diane Appaix Castro!
Southern Heat Exchange is excited to welcome Diane Appaix Castro as our June Artist in Residence!
Diane Appaix Castro (she/her) is a 27 year old French and Spanish sculptor and installation artist who was born in Paris, France and grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts from age four. She received a BFA from The New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University and is currently studying at Tulane University from which she will receive her MFA in sculpture in May, 2022.
Her work is strongly informed by her experience as an immigrant living at the intersection of three different cultures.
Her works deal with the concepts of existence, humanity, presence - finding new ways to declare how we are in the world and leaving the door for possibilities elsewhere.
Her most recent works involve isolating the senses through immersive and experiential installations which force the participant to submit to the experience. Other current work deals with the displacement of a being from its environment, and how it decays and reveals its inner workings through this process.
Additionally, Diane curates and manages an art gallery called Studio Appaix from her home.
