August 2021: Welcome Ann Glaviano!
✦ It’s August and SHE is beaming as we welcome Ann Glaviano as our next artist in residence ✦
Her plethora of creative tools includes movement, music, words, film, live performance, and frequent collaboration to name a few, and we are excited to dive into her choreographic process this month.
Ann Glaviano is a dancer, DJ, writer, and born-and-raised New Orleanian. In 2013 Ann established the New Orleans–based performance project Known Mass, aesthetically and ethically motivated by devised-theatre and DIY punk traditions; in seven years, she has produced and directed 12 collaborative projects with local dancers, musicians, photographers, filmmakers, and visual artists. As a freelance dancer Ann has performed with the New Orleans Ballet Theatre and the New Orleans Opera Association, among many others. She has choreographed for Hulu’s television show The First, an episode directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven (Mustang). Ann’s dance film 01_fieldrecording had its world premiere in January 2019 at Highways in Los Angeles, selected for the inaugural event of their MOTION CAPTURE series.
Most recently she performed in a dystopic faux-corporate art installation in Dresden, Germany, and created a fantasy dance team that brought a durational site-specific strolling dance performance to the streets of New Orleans to recognize Mardi Gras in a year without parades or parties. Ann is currently an artist-in-residence at the Contemporary Art Center New Orleans as part of the re:FRAME solo choreography cohort, working on a commission funded through South Arts.
Since 2011 Ann has run a friendly neighborhood dance party called HEATWAVE! spinning vinyl records from 1957-1974; in 2016, she was nominated by Offbeat as Best DJ in New Orleans. Her prose has appeared in Best American Short Stories 2018 (ed. Roxane Gay), Tin House, and Slate, among other publications. In 2018, in recognition of her cross-disciplinary artistic achievements and track record of art community facilitation, Ann was honored as one of Gambit’s 40 Under 40 (Go Ann!).
